Welcome to Nhulunbuy High School

Welcome to the Nhulunbuy High School website. Whether you are already a member of our school community, perhaps considering relocating to Nhulunbuy in North East Arnhem Land, or you are simply interested in finding out a little more about our school, this website aims to provide you with information and provide an insight into the unique opportunities that we provide to our students and families.

We are a comprehensive secondary school for students in Middle Years (7-9), and Senior Years (10-12) teaching the Australian Curriculum and providing strong academic and vocational pathways through the NTCET and VET to university, apprenticeships, fulltime employment and beyond. As a Registered Training Organisation we provide nationally accredited vocational certificates and pathways to students and the community.  Also included within our school is a Special Education Centre which supports students with significant additional needs. In 2017 we opened our Dawurr Boarding facility for 40 Indigenous students from very remote communities in Arnhem Land, NT wishing to access a full secondary education at Nhulunbuy High School.

What makes Nhulunbuy High School special?  As a small regional school located on traditional Yolngu land, the school is an extension of the vibrant and resilient township of Nhulunbuy. Our experienced and dedicated staff regularly go the extra mile to provide support to our students.  We aim to give every student in our care the very best possible education in order to prepare them for a successful and fulfilling life.

We are proud of the relationships and partnerships we have created between students, staff, parents and families, local businesses and the wider community. These partnerships enable us to build innovative and quality programs and to deliver on our commitment to engage students in a dynamic curriculum and safe learning environment with a 21st century focus. The result is a school of 320 students and 50 staff, which is active, collaborative and productive.  The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and family orientated, with respect being a key value.

Students of this school come from many and varied backgrounds as is typical of a community where the main economic industry is mining.  There is however a significant group who have been born and raised in this town, or whose family has lived on their traditional lands for thousands of years.  The result is a mix of young people who are accepting of each other and have learned to welcome newcomers.  The students at Nhulunbuy High School are generally motivated and enthusiastic.  Academic success has been the hallmark of the school for many years and students are also very successful in a range of other activities such as sporting events, Music, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, student exchanges, traineeships and apprenticeships and so on.  The school strives to ensure students are recognized for their achievements and the wellbeing of all is actively fostered.  We look forward to the opportunity to provide a secondary education for your child.
